Not all day trips are created equal, and we did a lot of research to make sure we chose the most worthwhile destinations.
Whether you’ve got Galway Girl by Ed Sheeran on repeat or you want to see where the sea meets the sky, these Dublin day trips have something for every type of traveler.
Wicklow Mountains & Glendalough

If this place looks familiar, you might have watched P.S. I Love You or Braveheart one too many times depending on if you’re a sucker for tears… or blood. Either way, the beauty of this national park is undeniable.
The Wicklow Mountains and Glendalough are about an hour south of Dublin, making it the perfect day trip from the city. It’s also close enough that hopefully you’ll be able to decide to head here on a day with good weather because you’ll need it.
To us, this was one of the most beautiful stops we made. The name Glendalough translates to “Valley of the Two Lakes,” which is just a bit of an understatement. The stunning glacial lakes are surrounded by green forests and mountains that make for some pretty dramatic scenery. And even though it’s only an hour away from the city, it truly feels like a whole different world.
It’s everything we expected Ireland to be; rugged, green, and absolutely breathtaking.
Take a walk around the lakes or hike up to the upper lake for a better view and then head over to see the famous monastic site of St. Kevin’s Church, which has been around since the 6th century. The gray stone ruins set against a backdrop of green and blue is a photographer’s dream—we were in heaven.
The Round Tower in the center of the cemetery really took us by surprise, still completely intact, standing 30m tall, and built without any mortar or cement. Can you imagine building something like this in the 6th century? It’s mind-boggling.
Featured on our Southern Ireland Road Trip
Glendalough was one of the places we visited as we drove through southern Ireland. In this video, you’ll also see other places featured such as Kilkenny, Cliffs of Moher, and Galway.

Kilkenny

One of the most underrated day trips from Dublin is a visit to the medieval city of Kilkenny. Located just 1.5 hours away from Dublin by bus or train, this charming town is filled with history, culture, and plenty of things to do.
There are quite a few tours that include a stop in Kilkenny, but if you have the time, we highly recommend spending a full day exploring this city on your own. Plus, it’s super walkable, so getting here by public transportation is very easy and then you can just walk around to see the sights.
Kilkenny for a long time, and we would even say until now, has been known for its strong culture of brewing. The city is home to the famous Smithwick’s Brewery, which offers tours and tastings for those interested in learning about the brewing process and trying some delicious Irish beer.
But after a day in the city, it’s clear that Kilkenny has so much more to offer than just beer. You can start by taking a walking tour through the city center, where you’ll pass by historic buildings and landmarks such as Black Abbey church, St. Canice’s Cathedral, and Rothe House.
One of our favorite spots in Kilkenny is the Medieval Mile Museum—it’s the perfect place to dive into the city’s rich history. It’s located in a beautifully restored 13th-century church which just added to the experience. The museum is filled with fascinating artifacts that truly bring Kilkenny’s medieval past to life.
And, of course, you can’t visit Kilkenny without checking out its stunning castle. Built in the 12th century, Kilkenny Castle is such an iconic landmark! We loved taking a guided tour to explore its insides, but if you’re short on time this is definitely something you can admire from the outside as well.

Howth

The most popular day trip from Dublin is to Howth, a scenic fishing village located about 15 kilometers northeast of the city. It’s super easy to reach with the DART train, which takes about 30 minutes from the city center. So you really can even visit the town in the morning or afternoon and still have plenty of time back in the city.
Howth really took us by surprise, I mean we knew that small villages always have a certain charm and character, but Howth was just something special. We’d even go on to say that it’s our favorite day trip from Dublin (after the Cliffs of Moher, but they are just in another league).
The best thing about Howth: The walks! It would be enough to simply wander around the harbor area and watch the boats come in while browsing through all the small fish shops along West Pier. But the highlight of this visit is definitely hiking up to Howth Head.
As avid hikers, we highly recommend taking a hike along one of the many walking trails that offer stunning views of Dublin Bay and Ireland’s Eye. You can choose between an easy stroll or a more challenging hike, depending on your fitness level.
And of course, after a hike, you gotta chow down, and this is definitely the place to do it. Howth offers some of the best seafood you’ll ever have. We stopped in Octopussy’s Seafood Tapas Bar (I know, what a name right?) But everything we had was absolutely delicious. For us, this is a must-stop on any trip to Dublin.

The Cliffs Of Moher
Now we don’t think this next day trip needs any introduction, but maybe a bit of information on how to get there!
The Cliffs of Moher are one of Ireland’s most iconic landmarks, and for good reason. We had seen the photos and dreamt of getting to capture these cliffs on camera for years. And let me tell you, they did not disappoint. We were absolutely blown away by the sheer size and beauty of these cliffs.
But it’s not the easiest day trip to do from Dublin, as it is about a 3-hour drive each way. However, if you’re up for the journey, we highly recommend making the trip to see this natural wonder.
The Cliffs of Moher are located on the west coast of Ireland. And they’re not just any cliffs, they are some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, standing at a whopping 702 feet (214 meters) at their highest point.
The best way to reach the Cliffs of Moher is by booking a day tour or renting a car and driving yourself. We decided to go on a tour because we didn’t want to worry about driving or figuring out how to navigate the windy roads. Plus, the tour also included stops at other beautiful sights like the Burren and Galway city.
The only downside we found to be with a tour is we were on someone else’s schedule, but at the end of it, we felt like we had plenty of time at the cliffs. We were able to walk along the designated paths and take in the stunning views from different angles.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Travel time: 3 Hour Drive from Dublin.
- Best time to visit: The summer months (June-August) have the best weather, but can also be the busiest. The mornings are usually less crowded and the cloud cover tends to be lower, providing better views. Avoid visiting during extreme winds or heavy rain.
- Entrance fee: €8 for adults and €4 for children over the age of 12. Children under 12 can enter for free.
- What to wear: Dress in layers, in the blink of an eye the winds can shift and the temperature can drop. Also, wear comfortable shoes as there is a lot of walking involved.

- Don’t forget to bring extra layers, even if it’s a sunny day. The winds at the Cliffs of Moher can be extremely strong and change quickly.
Galway City
If you choose to do the day trip to the Cliffs of Moher, you will have the opportunity to explore Galway City. And if not, then you can always plan a separate trip to this charming city. Galway City is such a vibe and don’t tell anyone we said this, but we might like it better than Dublin. It’s smaller, but somehow feels more alive and has a strong sense of community.
Now, we know you’re literally driving from one side of the country to the other but it’s so worth it. The harbor city is the pure essence of an Irish city. With colorful buildings, lively pubs, and traditional Irish music being played in the streets, this is exactly how we imagined Ireland to be. Plus, the street art in Galway is incredible, our camera roll was filled with photos of different murals and graffiti.
We know Galway is far for a day trip, so we highly recommend staying longer if you have the time. But if not, even a few hours in this city will allow you to see quite a lot. Join a walking tour to learn about the city’s history and get some insider tips on where to eat, drink, and shop. Or if you decide to wander about on your own, here are some of our top recommendations:
- Shop at the Galway Market.
- Visit the Spanish Arch and the Claddagh Ring Museum.
- Walk along Salthill Promenade.
- Discover the Eyre Square.
- Listen to some traditional Irish music at a pub.
- Try some local seafood dishes, like fish and chips or oysters.

Giants Causeway & Belfast

We’ve gone from the East Coast to the West Coast, so now it’s time to head all the way North! One of our favorite trips in Ireland is visiting the Giant’s Causeway and Belfast. It’s just completely different from anything else you’ve seen in Ireland. It’s rugged, beautiful, and a bit eerie.
We recommend taking a tour from Dublin, which includes a stop in Belfast and the Causeway. You’ll most likely pass Belfast on your way to the Causeway and have a stop there on the way back.
First, you’ll head to the Giant’s Causeway, a World Heritage Site made up of over 40,000 interlocking basalt columns formed by an ancient volcanic eruption. It truly is a remarkable sight to see. It’s said to be built by giants according to Irish legend. And after seeing it in person, we might be believers! You’ll have the chance to walk across the columns, take some epic photos, and learn all about the history and geology of this unique location.
Next, you’ll head back down to Belfast, make sure to check out the Titanic Museum and learn about the city’s history with shipbuilding and its tragic sinking. You can also visit the famous political murals and learn about The Troubles that affected Northern Ireland for decades.
If you go on the tour you’ll have about 1.5 hours on your own in Belfast, but the guide will give you some recommendations.
While of course, you can do this trip on your own by renting a car, we highly recommend taking a tour. We learned so much more than we would have about how the causeway was formed and the history of Northern Ireland and trust us, the history of Northern Ireland is fascinating.
