Airports that don’t offer free wifi drive me insane.  American airports are notorious for not offering free wifi and instead electing to use a service called Boingo where you either have to pay for a day pass to use wifi or pay a monthly fee to gain unlimited access to Boingo hotspots.  In this day and age it’s just insulting!  Who’s with me here?

On my latest trip to New York, unwilling to let Boingo win, I decided to poke around to see if there was a way around this.

I thought it was hopeless until I stumbled upon this very travel hack.  You won’t believe how incredibly simple it is.  Without further ado, here are the steps to get your free wifi.

Update: Boingo has closed this loop hole but if you discover a new one, let us know!

I’ve so far tested this at both LaGuardia (LGA) and Newark (EWR) with success but I would also love to know if this works at other airports that force you to use Boingo wifi.  Chime in if you know or if you’ve tried this hack after reading this article.  Chicago O’Hare works as well!

Enjoy!

Travel Resources For Your Next Trip

If you’re in the process of planning your trip and putting together your itinerary, these are genuinely the best resources that the Going Awesome Places team stands by 100%.
Credit Cards

Don’t get burned by hidden fees on top of terrible exchange rates. When we travel now, we use the Wise Card. Simply load it with the currency you need before you go and use it as a regular VISA or their digital wallet card. Use their free app to track how much you have and top up when you need to.

Flights

In our opinion, of all the booking search engines, Skyscanner is the most helpful and easy to use thanks to their Everywhere feature. Kayak is also another that’s we will often check.

Car Rental

If you’re looking to save money, these car rental coupon codes will be a true game-changer. Otherwise, DiscoverCars and Booking’s car rental platform are great places to start.

Rideshare

You probably already have accounts but if you don’t, for new Lyft users, use code WILLIAM4825 to get 50% off your first 2 rides (max $10 per ride). Offer valid for 14 days after you take your first ride. For new Uber users, use code cbh4j6plxt8p for the same offer except it’s valid for 30 days.

Airport Parking

You’ll need a spot to leave your car at the airport so why not book a spot at a discount. Use code AWESOME7 to get at least $5 off at Airport Parking Reservations or Park Sleep Fly packages.

eSIM

eSIM: This is our go-to way of staying connected.  Below are the discounts we have acquired for our readers.

  • AmigoSIM – Use GOINGAWESOMEPLACES to save 25% off. Code is re-useable.
  • Gigsky – Use TANG149 to get $3 USD when you sign up, then use code GOINGAWESOME to save 20% on all eSIM orders.
  • Airalo – Use referral code WILLIA9500 to get $3 USD credit on your first purchase.
  • KnowRoaming – Use code GAP10 to save 10%.

  • Saily – Use code GAP15 to save 15%.

Make sure to read our article on breaking down the cheapest eSIMs for travel to learn more.

Wifi Hotspot

We’ve been a huge fan of wifi hotspot devices such as PokeFi (use code GAP24300) because their rates are are hard to beat and it works globally. Solis is another that we recommend. Pros are that you can share the wifi with your whole group but cons are that you have to invest in a device and you have to charge it every night.

Hotels

Our go-to is Booking.com because they have the best inventory of properties including hotels and B&Bs plus they have their Genius tier discounts. Expedia is also worth using especially with their One Key rewards program which is basically like cash. The exception is Asia where Agoda always has the best prices. Always do a quick check on TripAdvisor as well.

Vacation Rentals

Your first instinct will be to go to Airbnb but we always recommend checking VRBO as well if you’re looking for a vacation rental (now eligible for One Key).

Tours and Activities

When planning our trips, we always check both Viator and GetYourGuide to at least see what’s out there in the destination that we’re going to. They often have different offerings and prices so check both.

Travel Insurance

Learn how to buy the best travel insurance for you. This isn’t something you want to travel without.

  • HeyMondo – Popular insurance provider for frequent travelers and comes with great coverage and special perks. By booking through our link to get a 5% discount!

    1. Thanks for the heads up Courtney. I’ve noticed that in the past year, they’ve patched up these loopholes. I’ve tested it in LaGaurdia and Newark recently and it’s all redesigned now unfortunately! One of these days all airports will have free wifi I hope!

  1. sir,
I want to know password of free wifi at the ORD chikago airport, so that I may call to my daughter, who is living in chicago, buffalo grove.
My Airindia flight is on 22.12.2016 at 1:30 pm.
Kindly guide me how can I use free wifi and let me know password of airport wifi.

    1. Hi Jagdish, unfortunately I don’t know how ORD is set up right now with Boingo. It does look like they may have closed the loop on this as my recent trip to LGA proved that you can’t do this anymore.

  2. Umm..all Boingo airports have permanent free wifi. So what’s the point of this “hack”? And why pick on the wifi provider? Do you do the same for the food vendors SELLING you food in the airport? The taxis SELLING you rides? Hell, why are you PAYING for airline tickets? Shouldn’t all of that be free too?

    1. Hey Mike,

Actually I would say that most airports don’t offer free Boingo wifi and if so there’s typically some sort of action required to get limited free access (i.e. download an app). While this hack won’t necessarily work at all airports, at one point it worked at LaGuardia and Newark. I know a few readers have gotten this to work at other airports. It’s really up to you if you want to use this hack or not. Personally, in this day and age, wifi should be free at airports but hey that’s just me.

      1. I’ve read the press releases and Boingo now offers free wifi at all their locations. Advertising is involved and from my experience the app download stuff is optional. went thru laguardia the other day and said no thanks to an app then watched a video ad then was online. why should wifi be free at the airports but not free airline tickets or free food in the airport? That’s what I’m trying to understand from you.

        1. Sure you’re entitled to that opinion. Not sure how free wifi is anywhere the same magnitude as free airline tickets or free food.

  3. I tried this method at JFK last week and after a little struggle I managed to enter the network.
After a while I was kicked out and I was afraid to retry :)
How often I can use this? they can find me if I try to reconnect?

    1. Hey Emma,

That is strange! I wonder if they’ve patched this problem…in which case that would be very sad. When I did it, I was able to stay consistently online the whole time.

  4. I am so trying this ! We’ll be at JFK and La Guardia so I’m curious to see if it works which I hope it does. Thanks!

  5. Great advice! Hopefully the guys at Boingo don’t realize and correct this bug (or not at least anytime soon!). Thanks for the tip.

  6. lol I cant believe how easy it is! when I clicked on the post I swear I was expecting lots of steps and weird terminology and coding. Thanks for sharing! Im so ready to face Boingo now that I know its weak spot :P

    1. Yeah its definitely a nifty little hack that works. I honestly stumbled upon it by accident because I was so frustrated about having to pay for wifi!

  7. Great tip! In years past there was another type of internet service at airports that required you download an app before you could get internet. I found with that one you could get to the point of download, and then exit and still have free internet without downloading. Good to know Boingo has a similar work around. Will definitely be trying this the next time we’re at a Boingo airport.

  8. shoot I was just at Newark I could have tested this! I was in the Porter lounge though and they have free (albeit it crappy) wifi.

  9. This was an awesome tip Will! I was at Newark Airport this past summer and was so disturbed to see that they didn’t offer free wifi!!!! What?! Well, now I know. Great Hack – Thank you!

    1. Yah it’s pretty sweet right? I don’t think anyone knows about this hack so hopefully you’ll be one of the awesome few that get to take advantage ;)
