How to Get Around the Maldives
The Maldives is a scattered island nation, so most travel between islands is by speedboat, public ferry, or domestic flight. From Malé (the capital), resort islands typically arrange transfers via speedboat or seaplane. Public ferries are a budget-friendly way to visit local islands, though schedules can be limited and weather-dependent. Speedboats offer more flexibility and are common for shorter inter-island hops.
Domestic flights are used for more remote atolls and are well-connected from Malé International Airport. Within islands, you can usually walk or rent a bicycle, and in urban areas like Malé or Hulhumalé, taxis are available.
Resort islands tend to be small and walkable. When booking accommodation, always confirm the transfer options in advance—they are often mandatory and can be a significant additional cost.
